Da Nang to Phong Nha by Private Car

There are four ways to get from Da Nang to Phong Nha, and they do not drop you in the same place. Trains and flights stop at Dong Hoi, about 45 km short of the caves. Buses end at a station in Phong Nha town. A Da Nang to Phong Nha private car ends at your hotel door, or at the cave boat station itself. The difference matters because of one fact: Phong Nha Cave is seen by boat, and the last boats leave in the mid-afternoon. How you travel decides whether you see a cave on the day you arrive, or lose that day to the road. Below are the four ways compared honestly, with the car price given in full.

Mui Ne Private Car is a private transport company with more than 8 years of experience on routes across Vietnam. We run this trip with our own cars and local drivers. Message us on WhatsApp at +84 976 694 384 and we confirm your fixed price before you travel.

Every Way from Da Nang to Phong Nha, Compared

Most of the searching for this route is not about the car at all. It is about trains, sleeper buses and flights, so here is the whole picture in one place:

WayDoor to doorWhere it leaves youA cave on arrival day?
Private car5.5 to 6 hours directYour hotel in Phong Nha, or the boat stationYes, with an early start
Train + last legAbout 8 to 9 hours in totalDong Hoi station, then 45 km still to cover by bus or taxiNo, on a morning train. An overnight sleeper arrives early enough
Direct busAbout 6 to 6.5 hours, at fixed departure timesPhong Nha townOnly the overnight bus, which arrives in the early morning
Flight + last legA short flight, plus airport time, plus about 1 hour on the roadDong Hoi Airport, then the same 45 km last legDepends on the flight time

The pattern in the table is the Dong Hoi gap. Every train and every flight sold as "to Phong Nha" actually ends in Dong Hoi, a separate city about 45 km and about 1 hour of driving from the caves. From there you still need a last leg: a local bus that takes about 1.5 to 2 hours with stops, or a taxi you arrange when you arrive. The train itself takes about 5.5 to 7 hours from Da Nang to Dong Hoi, so the full train day usually comes to 8 to 9 hours. Train tickets run from about $10 to $35 per person depending on the seat or berth, which is why the train makes sense for a solo traveler watching every dollar. The private car is the only way in the table with no gap at all: no station, no last leg, no second booking.

The closest alternative is the overnight services. A sleeper train or an overnight bus leaves Da Nang in the evening and puts you in the area in the early morning, so your cave day can still start on time. But both fix your schedule for you, both end at a station or, from Dong Hoi, with the last leg still to cover, and both ask you to sleep on the move and start a cave day on whatever rest you got. Set against the whole table, the private car is the best way to make this trip for most travelers. It is the only option that is door to door, the only one that leaves at your time, the only one that can stop at the DMZ on the way, and the only one that puts you inside Phong Nha Cave on arrival day after a normal night in a bed. For two or more travelers, its one fixed price per car also usually costs less in total than the platform tours on this route, which are priced per person.

The Boat Clock: Why Your Start Time Decides the Cave Day

Phong Nha Cave has no road into it. Boats carry visitors from the boat station in Son Trach, on the Son River, about 1.5 km into the cave, and the boats run on daylight hours. The station opens in the morning, and the last boats leave at about 3:30 to 4:00 PM. Miss the last boat and the cave waits until tomorrow, whatever your plans were.

That one fact sets the whole day. A private car that leaves Da Nang in the early morning reaches Phong Nha around the middle of the day, and you are on a boat in the early afternoon with time to spare. A morning train or bus lands in the afternoon, after the boats, so those days end with a night in town and the cave the next morning. Neither is wrong. They are just different trips, and the start time is what chooses between them.

There is also a fallback built into the caves themselves. Paradise Cave has no boat at all. You drive up to it, and it stays open until 4:30 PM. If your day runs later than planned, Paradise Cave can still fit on arrival day, and the boat cave moves to the next morning.

A Day Trip, or Stay the Night?

This is the question travelers ask about this route in two different wordings, so it gets a straight answer. A day trip is possible: drive direct in the early morning, take the boat into Phong Nha Cave, and drive back to Da Nang the same day. It means 11 to 12 hours on the road inside one day, and it leaves no room for the DMZ stops or a second cave. Travelers who book it that way usually book the car and driver for the whole day, with the waiting at the cave included in that booking.

Staying the night is what most travelers choose, and the days divide naturally. One night gives you the arrival afternoon for one cave and the next morning for the other, with the drive back after. Two nights add Dark Cave and a slower pace. The DMZ stops fit on either drive, out or back, when they are agreed with us when you book, at no extra charge. Tell us which shape you want, and we set the start time around it.

The Drive North: What the Day Looks Like

Pickup in Da Nang

Your driver comes to your hotel or address in Da Nang at the time you booked, early in the morning if a cave is planned for arrival day. Your Da Nang to Phong Nha private car starts at your door, so your group and your luggage travel together in one car. If you are landing at Da Nang Airport instead, the pickup works the same way as in the airport section below.

Through the DMZ

The drive north crosses the Hai Van Pass and passes Lang Co and the Lap An Lagoon before it reaches the old DMZ in Quang Tri.

Two stops on this stretch carry the history of the area. Hien Luong Bridge crosses the Ben Hai River, the line that divided the country for 21 years.

The Vinh Moc Tunnels, a little further north, are a whole village that lived underground, and you walk through the tunnels themselves. Your driver chooses the best route on the day, based on traffic and road conditions, and stops wherever you agreed when you booked. There are also plain rest stops for food, coffee and a break from the car whenever you need one.

Arriving in Son Trach

Phong Nha town sits in Son Trach, and your driver drops you at the boat station if a cave is next on your plan, or at your hotel in town. He helps you unload your luggage and checks the car with you so nothing is left behind. That is the end of your Da Nang to Phong Nha private car trip with Mui Ne Private Car.

From Da Nang Airport Straight to Phong Nha

The airport sits inside the city, and the drive from the airport to Phong Nha takes about the same 5.5 to 6 hours. This is exactly how the pickup works:

Book the car for your landing time. Send us your flight number when you book, together with your landing time.

We track your flight. We follow your flight before you land. When a flight is delayed, we see the delay in the tracking and set the pickup time again to match your new landing time, so your driver is there when you actually land.

Meet your driver at the arrivals exit. Your driver stands at the arrivals exit holding a name board with your name on it. Come out of arrivals and look for the board. Your driver stays at that exit, and you can message us on WhatsApp at any point and we guide you to each other.

Drive north to Phong Nha. Your luggage goes in the car, and the drive takes 5.5 to 6 hours. Tell us when you book whether you are driving direct or stopping at the DMZ sights, so the day is planned around the boat times if you want a cave on arrival day.

The Three Caves, and What Each One Costs

Phong Nha town, in Son Trach, is the base for the caves of the national park. The area was part of Quang Binh Province and now sits in Quang Tri Province after the 2025 merger, so addresses and older listings still use both province names for the same places. These are the three stops most travelers choose between:

Phong Nha Cave

The boat cave, and the one this route is timed around. Boats leave the Son Trach boat station through the day, carry you about 1.5 km into the cave on the river, and land you for a short walk inside before the ride back. Entry is 150,000 VND per person, children under 1.3 m are free, and the boat is hired whole at 700,000 to 750,000 VND per boat for up to 12 people. Small groups can ask at the counter about sharing a boat with other visitors. Tickets are sold at the station, in cash, and the last boats leave at about 3:30 to 4:00 PM.

Paradise Cave

The dry cave, reached by road instead of by boat. A buggy carries you from the ticket area toward the entrance, then a flight of stone steps (or a ramp) brings you to the mouth of the cave, and a 1 km wooden boardwalk runs through the chambers. Entry is 270,000 VND per person including the buggy, and the cave is open from 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM. With no boat involved, this is the cave that still fits when a day runs late.

Dark Cave

The active one, on the Chay River. The full package, at 450,000 VND per person, combines a zipline, the dark mud-filled cave itself, swimming and kayaking. It is a half-day of getting wet and muddy rather than a sightseeing stop, and travelers usually give it its own morning or afternoon once they are based in Phong Nha.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you fly from Da Nang to Phong Nha?
Not quite. Flights from Da Nang land at Dong Hoi Airport, and Dong Hoi is about 45 km from Phong Nha town. From the airport you still need about an hour on the road, by taxi or by a car arranged in advance. The flight itself is short, so a morning flight can still put you at the caves the same day. What no flight does is land in Phong Nha itself.

The sleeper train sounds easy. Where does it actually leave us?
At Dong Hoi station, in the early morning, about 45 km from Phong Nha. The sleeper does the long part well: you board in Da Nang in the evening and sleep through the part of the trip the car drives in daylight. What remains is the last leg, a local bus of about 1.5 to 2 hours or a taxi of about 1 hour, with your luggage, at the start of your cave day. Travelers who plan that leg in advance feel the gap least.

Do we need to buy cave tickets in advance?
No. Phong Nha Cave tickets are sold at the boat station on the day, in cash, and there is no official advance sale to book. You pay the entry fee per person and hire the boat at the same counter. Paradise Cave tickets are also bought at its ticket area. The only booking you need in advance is the car, so your arrival lands before the last boats.

What happens if the caves are closed when we arrive?
The closure that matters here is water. When the Son River rises in the rainy season, the boat tours to Phong Nha Cave stop until the water drops again, and no company can run them. Paradise Cave is a dry cave reached by road, so it is the usual replacement on a wet day. If a closure hits your cave day, message us on WhatsApp and we rearrange the day with you, moving the cave visit or the drive so the trip still works.

We are heading to Hue or Hanoi after Phong Nha. Can the car take us onward?
Yes. Phong Nha connects onward in both directions: south back through the DMZ to Hue, or north to Ninh Binh and Hanoi. Tell our travel expert your next stop when you book this leg, and we quote the onward trip as part of the same plan.
