The Dung Quat Economic Zone sits on the Quang Ngai coast, a dozen kilometres east of Highway 1, where the Binh Son refinery, a steel complex and a deep-water port share a wide stretch of reclaimed shoreline. Nothing about that geography suits a timetable. Long-distance buses stay on the highway; local minibuses stop in Tam Ky; and the final leg into the zone usually means haggling for a taxi that may not be there.

On the Road: Hoi An to Dung Quat in Four Stages

Kilometre marks are approximate. Your driver will choose the fastest connection to Highway 1 on the day.

Stage 1 - Hoi An to the Thu Bon Plain  km 0 – 25

The ride starts slowly, and that is part of the charm. Leaving the lantern-lit lanes of the Old Town, the car threads past yellow-walled shophouses, bicycle repair stalls and early-morning coffee carts before the streets open into market-garden country. At 6 AM you will pass women setting out herb baskets and fishermen’s wives hauling ice, a reminder that Hoi An is still a working river town.

South and west of town, the road follows the broad Thu Bon river plain, flat and green, with irrigation channels flashing in the low sun. This is mulberry, maize and paddy land, and in the villages of Duy Xuyen many families still weave silk on wooden looms - the Ma Chau area is the best known. Roadside cafes here sell iced coconut coffee for a fraction of Old Town prices, and slowing down for a photo takes almost no planning.

By the time the car joins Highway 1, the traffic thickens with trucks, delivery vans and school-run motorbikes. Your chauffeur handles the merge, the roundabouts and the toll-free stretches without commentary unless you ask. This is the best moment to settle in: seat back, air-con set, and nothing to navigate.

Stage 2 - Thang Binh and Tam Ky  km 25 – 50

South of the river plain, the highway runs through an unglamorous but revealing slice of central Vietnam. Small-town markets, tile-roofed roadside restaurants and stacks of clay pots pass in quick succession. Thang Binh is a farming and trading town, and the sight of trucks loaded with sand, timber and peanuts explains why Highway 1 is the lifeline of the coast.

Tam Ky, the main city of this stretch, appears as a tidy grid of wide avenues, government buildings and cafes. It is the last real city before Dung Quat, and drivers often use it as a reference point: from here the remaining drive is about an hour. If you need a proper restroom stop or a quick bite, this is the place to ask for one. Roadside stalls sell Quang-style noodle dishes, and even a ten-minute pause resets the mood for the second half.

A few kilometres east of Tam Ky, the coastal village of Tam Thanh has become known for its painted walls and beach murals. It is a detour rather than a shortcut, but it is one of the few visual highlights between Hoi An and Dung Quat, and it fits neatly into a relaxed schedule when you are not racing a meeting.

Stage 3 - Nui Thanh and the Chu Lai Coast  km 50 – 75

Beyond Tam Ky the character of the road changes. The land becomes sandier, casuarina windbreaks line the fields, and the air carries a faint salt edge. The highway skirts Nui Thanh and the Chu Lai open economic zone, where large factory halls, car-assembly plants and logistics yards signal the start of Vietnam’s industrial coast. Everything looks newer and squarer than the towns behind you.

Chu Lai has a layered history. The airfield here was built as a US Marine base in 1965, and its runway now serves domestic flights as Chu Lai Airport. Ky Ha beach, a broad ribbon of pale sand not far away, is quiet on weekdays and rewarding for a short walk if you have time. For most passengers, though, the appeal of this section is the scale: long straight lanes, lorries in convoy, and the sense of leaving tourist Vietnam behind.

Somewhere on this stretch the road crosses the border into Quang Ngai province. There is no ceremony, only a change in road signs and, before long, the first distant glimpse of tall stacks and storage tanks on the horizon. Your driver will already be watching the clock, since the last spur to the coast is where shift-change traffic can slow things down.

Stage 4 - Binh Son and the Dung Quat Spur  km 75 – 95

At Binh Son the car leaves Highway 1 and heads east on the Dung Quat access road, a wide, purpose-built corridor of about twelve kilometres. The scene shifts abruptly: fishing villages give way to empty boulevards, security barriers and construction depots. Sand dunes and scrub pine still line the verges, but the horizon now belongs to steel frames, cranes and the pale outline of storage tanks.

The refinery, operated by Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical and running since 2009, sits between Dung Quat Bay and Viet Thanh Bay. On clear mornings the flare stacks and cooling towers are visible well before you reach the gate, and a huge steel complex and deep-water port share the same coastline. It is an unusual backdrop for a transfer, and passengers who have never been to a refinery zone usually reach for their phones.

Notable Stops Along the Way

Ma Chau Silk Weaving Village, Duy Xuyen  Near the start

Just outside Hoi An’s orbit, small workshops still turn cocoons into cloth on traditional looms. It is a quiet, low-cost stop where you can watch the process and buy a scarf straight from the weaver. Twenty to thirty minutes is plenty.

Tam Thanh Mural Village, Tam Ky  Short detour

Coloured murals cover the walls of a fishing community facing the sea, and the sand beach behind it is often empty on weekday mornings. Allow 45 to 60 minutes including the detour from Highway 1. A small surcharge may apply and is quoted in advance.

Ky Ha Beach, Chu Lai  Coast break

A long, uncrowded beach a short drive off the highway in the Chu Lai area. It works well as a leg-stretcher and a photo pause when you are ahead of schedule.

Dung Quat Bay Shoreline  Destination area

If your schedule allows, ask the driver to stop at a public vantage point along the bay. From there you can see the breakwater, the port cranes and the refinery skyline in a single frame - a striking contrast to the Old Town you left that morning. Only public roadside points are used; the plant itself is not open to sightseeing.
