Why a Private Car Beats the Bus on This Coastline

Nha Trang to Mui Ne is one of the busiest backpacker legs in Vietnam, and the sleeper bus is how most people cover it. It works, but you give up a lot: a fixed departure, bunks that are short for taller travellers, stops at the operator's chosen roadside halts, and an arrival at a drop point rather than your accommodation.

The train is not a clean alternative either. Services from Nha Trang reach Binh Thuan station, but Mui Ne is still a good drive beyond it, so you end up arranging a car anyway — with your luggage and after a long day.

A private driver turns the whole thing into one booking. You leave at the hour that suits you, keep your bags in the same vehicle from hotel lobby to resort entrance, and have someone who knows the road handling the three and a half hours.

And unlike a night bus, a car with driver lets you actually see this stretch of coast: Cam Ranh's bays, the dry red country around Phan Rang, the turquoise water at Ca Na and the sand dunes on the approach to Mui Ne.

Good to know: Leaving Nha Trang between 8:00 and 9:00 AM clears the morning traffic and puts you in Mui Ne in time for an afternoon check-in and the beach. Tell us if you would rather travel later and arrive for dinner.

Three and a half hours is long enough that legroom counts as much as luggage space. Pick by group size and how comfortable you want the drive to be.

On the Road: Nha Trang to Mui Ne in Four Stages

Kilometre marks are approximate. Your driver will take the fastest line on the day and fit the break around your plans.

Stage 1 — Nha Trang Down to Cam Ranh  km 0 – 50

Your driver arrives at your hotel a little ahead of the agreed time, with the air conditioning already running. They will help load your luggage and check with you that everything is aboard before you leave the city.

Nha Trang thins out quickly heading south, and the road picks up the shoreline past Cam Ranh bay — deep blue water, fishing boats at anchor and headlands running down to the sea.

The long sweep of Bai Dai follows, with the newer resort developments and Cam Ranh International Airport set back from the beach. If you are collecting passengers from a flight, this is where the route and the terminal meet.

Stage 2 — Cam Ranh to Phan Rang–Thap Cham  km 50 – 105

South of Cam Ranh the landscape dries out noticeably. Ninh Thuan is the most arid province in Vietnam, and it shows: scrub, bare rock, cactus along the verges and hills the colour of terracotta.

Farmland appears in the flat ground near the coast — vineyards and grape trellises, which the province is known for, along with fields of garlic and onions and the odd flock of sheep.

Phan Rang–Thap Cham sits at the end of this stage, a provincial town with deep Cham roots, and a practical place for the rest break if you have not stopped already.

Stage 3 — Down the Coast Through Ca Na and Tuy Phong  km 105 – 190

This is the stretch the bus passengers sleep through. Past Phan Rang the highway runs right along the shore at Ca Na, where the water turns a startling pale turquoise against rocky headlands and boulder fields.

Salt pans spread out in white rectangles on the inland side, worked by hand in the dry heat, and wind turbines stand on the ridges above them — this coast gets some of the steadiest wind in the country.

Through Tuy Phong and Phan Ri the road crosses into Binh Thuan province, with dragon fruit plantations taking over the fields and the first real sand country appearing on the seaward side.

Stage 4 — Off the Highway Into Mui Ne  km 190 – 231

The route leaves QL1 and turns for the coast, and the scenery changes character entirely: open sand, low scrub and the white dunes and freshwater lakes around Bau Trang.

Closer in you pass the red dunes above the village and the fleet of round basket boats drawn up on the beach at Mui Ne harbour, with the long line of resorts beginning along the shore.

Your driver continues to your resort entrance on Nguyen Dinh Chieu or wherever you are staying. Before unloading, they will ask you to check the car for phones, headphones, chargers and passports, then help with your bags and wish you a good stay on the coast we know best.

Notable Stops Along the Way

One of the better routes in the country for breaking up the drive. All of these are on or just off the road.

Bai Dai Beach, Cam Ranh  Just off route, about 15–20 minutes

A long, open beach south of Nha Trang that the highway runs beside for several kilometres. Early in the drive for a proper stop, but an easy few minutes if you want a last look at the Khanh Hoa coast.

Po Klong Garai Cham Towers  Near Phan Rang, about 40–50 minutes

A group of brick Cham temple towers on a hill just outside Phan Rang–Thap Cham, among the best preserved in Vietnam and still used for Cham festivals. A short detour off the highway and the most substantial sight on the route.

Ca Na Bay & the Salt Fields  Directly on route, about 15–20 minutes

The highway runs along the water here, with pale turquoise sea on one side and salt pans on the other. There are roadside stops with drinks and shade, which makes it the natural place for your rest break.

Bau Trang White Sand Dunes  On the coastal approach, about 45–60 minutes

The white dunes and lotus lake sit on the final run into Mui Ne, so you can visit on the way in rather than making a separate trip later. Best in the softer light of late afternoon.
