On the Road: Quang Ngai to Quy Nhon in Four Stages

Stage 1 — Quang Ngai City to Duc Pho  km 0 – 60

Leaving Quang Ngai, the highway cuts through flat, intensively farmed land where sugarcane and rice share the same fields, often within sight of the Tra Khuc river's lower reaches. Roadside stalls sell fresh sugarcane juice and don que candy, a local specialty worth a quick stop if the driver is not already ahead of schedule.

The land narrows gradually as low hills close in from the west, squeezing the highway toward the coast. Fishing hamlets appear more frequently, their nets drying along the roadside fences, and the smell of the sea starts to compete with the smell of cane fields.

By the time the road reaches Duc Pho, the coastline is close enough to glimpse between buildings. This modest market town is best known for what lies just beyond it: the salt flats and pale-sand beach of Sa Huynh, one of the most photographed stretches on this entire route.

Stage 2 — Sa Huynh and the Provincial Border  km 60 – 95

South of Duc Pho, the road hugs a genuinely beautiful shoreline. Sa Huynh's salt fields spread out in shallow, mirror-like pans that catch the light differently depending on the hour, with workers raking crystallised salt into small white mounds by hand. The beach itself, curved and relatively undeveloped, sits just a few hundred metres off the highway and rewards even a short stop.

Beyond Sa Huynh, the highway climbs briefly over a low coastal pass before dropping back to sea level. This short rise marks one of the more scenic short sections of the drive, with the ocean visible on one side and terraced farmland on the other.

Somewhere along this stretch, the road crosses from Quang Ngai province into Binh Dinh province. There is no dramatic marker, only a change of road signs and a subtle shift in the accents you would hear if you stopped for coffee — a reminder that this is still a journey between two distinct regional identities, not just two cities.

Stage 3 — Hoai Nhon to Phu My  km 95 – 145

Hoai Nhon is a working coastal town built around fishing and boat repair, and it is common to pass rows of blue-and-white trawlers under construction in open-air yards beside the highway. The pace of the drive settles into a steady rhythm here, with wide, well-maintained road surface and long straight sections.

Further south, the land opens into a patchwork of aquaculture ponds and casuarina windbreaks. This is shrimp and fish-farming country, and the shallow, brackish Chau Truc Lagoon lies a short detour east of the highway near Phu My — a quiet expanse of water dotted with fishing boats and stilted huts, rarely visited by anyone not specifically looking for it.

Phu My itself is unremarkable to look at, but it matters for logistics: this is the junction town nearest Phu Cat Airport, and drivers dropping passengers for a flight will start watching the clock here rather than waiting until the airport turn-off.

Stage 4 — Phu Cat to Quy Nhon  km 145 – 195

The Phu Cat Airport turn-off appears on the right, well signposted and quick to reach from the highway — a five-minute detour at most for passengers ending their journey here rather than in Quy Nhon proper. For everyone continuing on, the road pushes further south through gentle rice-growing country dotted with small brick kilns.

On the final approach to Quy Nhon, the twin red-brick Banh It Cham towers rise on a hilltop just off the road in An Nhon, remnants of the ancient Champa kingdom that once ruled this coastline. They are visible from the highway itself, and a short stop lets you climb up for a closer look and a wide view back over the plain you just crossed.

From there, the road bends toward the sea, and Quy Nhon reveals itself gradually: fishing boats first, then the long curve of Xuan Dieu beachfront promenade, and finally the low mountains that frame the city's bay. Your driver will take you straight to your hotel, the airport, the station or the ferry pier — whichever you confirmed at booking — with the whole 195 km behind you in one uninterrupted ride.

Sa Huynh Salt Fields & Beach, Duc Pho  Near the start

Shallow evaporation pans where salt farmers work barefoot under the sun, right beside a quiet curved beach. Best visited in the mid-morning when the salt-raking is in full swing. Thirty minutes is enough for photos and a short walk.

Chau Truc Lagoon, Phu My  Short detour

Binh Dinh's largest natural lagoon, ringed by stilted fishing huts and small boats. It is a working waterway rather than a tourist attraction, which is exactly its appeal for travellers who want a quiet, unstaged glimpse of coastal life. Allow 30 to 45 minutes including the detour from Highway 1.

Banh It Cham Towers, An Nhon  Near the destination

A cluster of four brick towers built by the Champa kingdom around the 11th and 12th centuries, standing on a hill with sweeping views over the surrounding plain. It sits just off the highway on the final approach into Quy Nhon and rewards a 20 to 30 minute stop.

Xuan Dieu Beachfront, Quy Nhon  Destination area

The city's long curved promenade, backed by hotels and open-air seafood restaurants, is where most Quy Nhon stays begin. Arriving in the afternoon leaves time for a swim or an early dinner facing the bay before the evening market stalls open along the seafront.
