Two Ways to Get from Sapa to Cat Ba Island
Cat Ba Island lies off shore and demands that you cross water no matter which way you go. We have two options available; pick whichever one suits you better.
Option 1: Via Dong Bai Ferry Terminal
The normal way to go about things and the easiest one. The journey from Sapa through the CT05 expressway ends up at Dong Bai Ferry Terminal (Ben Pha Dong Bai) in Hai Phong where you will be taken onboard by your driver. On arrival at your destination, there will be another car waiting for you to drop you off at your hotel.
The fare for the ferry ride is included in the total package and it only takes 25-30 minutes. It's a nice break mid-way and allows you to relax while taking in the sights on the open deck.
Option 2: Via Cat Ba Cable Car
If you would like to include the cable car ride to your travel itinerary. Your personal transport will depart from Sapa through route CT05 and proceed to the Cat Ba Cable Car Station. Upon the completion of your cable car ride (tickets bought individually on the day – excluded from our pricing package), another vehicle awaits your arrival at the other end of the cat Ba cable station to deliver you to your accommodation or to any location within the island.
This transportation mode will give you elevated scenery throughout your ride across the bay – an entirely new experience compared to the ferry ride. Please allow around 20 to 30 minutes extra for boarding, riding, and meeting at the exit station.

Traveling from Sapa to Cat Ba involves traveling a total distance of about 443 km via the CT05 Noi Bai – Lao Cai Expressway that connects them to the Dong Bai Ferry Terminal for a round trip that takes around 6 hours and 26 minutes. With a crossing time of 25–30 minutes, travelers should get to Cat Ba Island within the same day if they start their journey from Sapa at around 7 in the morning.
For most part, travel from Sapa to Cat Ba will involve taking the CT05 expressway, which comprises a modern four-lane highway with excellent maintenance and regular access to service stations along the way. It is a descent from the highlands to the lowlands and the scenery changes accordingly, starting out in cool mountain air and then descending into a humid delta.

How the Transfer Works
Before Departure
Before the day of your travel, you will get a confirmation message via WhatsApp with all details regarding the first car, including the driver’s full name, mobile number, type of car, and the license plate number. Since the transfer includes two legs, the confirmation message will include all information about the second car as well.
Sapa to the Ferry (or Cable Car Terminal)
Your driver picks up you from your Sapa hotel according to the pre-arranged schedule. With bags packed, all passengers settled in their seats, the car will head downhill to Sapa via route QL4D and then continue along CT05 expressway heading southeast to Hai Phong city. The change in altitude during the descent to the sea from the mountain range of Sapa is quite evident during the first 30 minutes – pines giving way to terraced rice paddies, cooler temperatures replaced by the hot air. Then comes the CT05, which makes it easier – four lanes, good pavement, and some resting spots at service areas where you may take your lunch and then proceed.
Depending on the type of transport that you have selected, you’ll arrive either at the Dong Bai Ferry Terminal or the Cat Ba Cable Car terminal. They both located on the outskirts of Hai Phong city, on the seaside, and require some local knowledge on the part of the driver to locate them.
The Crossing
Ferry (Option 1): The Dong Bai ferry crossing takes about 25-30 minutes. Seating is on an open-air deck; from a clear sky, you can see the karst limestone of Cat Ba Island after about 15 minutes of sailing. Ferry ticket included in transfer fee; your driver will take care of the arrangements.
Cable Car (Option 2): The Cat Ba Cable Car is one of the longest cable car routes in Vietnam. It provides stunning views over the bay and is definitely worth taking if you have not - especially if the weather is clear and you get to see the karst islands from all sides. Buy your ticket at the terminal (ticket not included in our transfer fee). This takes about 30-45 minutes.
Arrival on Cat Ba Island
Your second vehicle will be at the ferry or cable car station exit on the Cat Ba side. The driver will already know which hotel and address you are booked into before leaving the city. In an area where the addresses may not correspond to the maps, a guide who understands the geography of the island can save much time and effort. Sapa to Cat Ba Island Travel Tips

Leave Sapa by 7 AM – that means getting to the ferry port around noon and taking the ferry ride which will give you the evening light for visiting Cat Co beaches.

Please inform us in advance about your transportation selection – it can either be option number 1 where we’ll have to take a certain driving direction OR option number 2 where a totally different route will be taken. Changes in transportation on the spot are nearly impossible.

There are certain seasons for the cable car – the prices vary depending on time. Please get acquainted with the ticket pricing for the cable car in case of using option 2 and contacting us in advance. We can give some advice about what tickets to buy, however, we won’t do it for you.

A jacket for departure from Sapa is also recommended; although even in summer times, Sapa early morning at 6 am is still cool. No need for that jacket when arriving at the lowlands or on Cat Ba Island, however, since the first hour's journey involves cold mountain weather.

November to March can provide more peaceful environment due to smaller crowd sizes and cooler weather but not for beach activities.
