Hanoi to Huu Nghi Border by Private Car

Two kinds of travelers leave Hanoi for the Huu Nghi Border Gate, known in English as the Friendship Gate. One is crossing into China, on the way to Pingxiang or Nanning. The other is making a visa run, also called a border run: out of Vietnam, into China, and back into Vietnam on a new e-visa, all in one day. Both trips succeed or fail on the same two things, your papers and your timing at the gate.

The gate stands about 170 km from Hanoi, in Dong Dang town, Lang Son Province, and a Hanoi to Huu Nghi Border private car covers the distance in about 3 to 3.5 hours by expressway. Below are the two checks to make before you book, how the crossing itself works, what a visa run day looks like hour by hour, and the full price of both the one-way trip and the round trip.

Route Overview

Two Checks Before You Book the Car

The car solves the road. These two checks solve the gate, and both are decided before the day of the trip. Travelers who fail at Huu Nghi almost always fail on one of them, not on the drive.

Check 1: Can you enter China?

A visa run only counts when you actually enter the country next door, and at Huu Nghi that country is China. Chinese immigration must admit you before Vietnam will stamp you back in on a new stay.

China currently admits citizens of around 50 countries without a visa, for stays of up to 30 days, under a policy that runs to the end of 2026. Every other passport needs a Chinese visa arranged in advance. No Chinese visa is issued at the gate itself.

Send us your passport nationality when you book, and we will tell you plainly which case you are in before you pay anything. If your passport needs a Chinese visa and you do not have one, the working alternative is a visa run to a Laos gate. From Hanoi those runs are longer, usually with a night away, and we can quote them as well.

Check 2: Your new Vietnam e-visa must name this gate

On a visa run, you re-enter Vietnam on a new e-visa, and the approval must list Huu Nghi International Border Gate as the entry point. An approval that names an airport or a different land gate cannot be used here, and the mistake is only discovered at the window.

Apply early enough for the approval to be in your hand before the morning of the run, and save a copy offline on your phone, because the signal at the gate is not reliable. The final decision at the window belongs to the immigration officer, and no driver or agent can promise it. Our driver does not handle visa paperwork. What we control is getting you there early, with the right papers, and bringing you back.

What to carry on the day

• Your passport, valid for at least 6 months.
• The new Vietnam e-visa approval, printed or saved offline, if you are making a visa run.
• Your Chinese visa, if your nationality needs one.
• Cash for small expenses at the gate, where card payments are unreliable. Foreign cash above USD 5,000, or VND 15,000,000, must be declared to customs.

On a visa run, your main luggage can stay in the car while you are inside. The driver keeps it, and you cross with only what you need in your hands.

How the Crossing Works

The passenger side of Huu Nghi works separately from the freight lanes, and the crossing itself is done on foot. This is the order of it.

Out of Vietnam

The car drops you at the passenger terminal on the Vietnamese side, and the driver helps you with your luggage to the door. Inside, you hand over your passport for the exit stamp, and your bags go through the X-ray. Nobody asks to see your new e-visa on the way out. It is needed on the way back in.

The walk to the Chinese side

From the terminal you walk, or ride the electric shuttle, along the crossing corridor to the Chinese port building at Youyi Guan. China runs one hour ahead of Vietnam, so the clock on the wall changes as you cross.

Into China, and back into Vietnam

Chinese immigration checks your passport and your visa or visa-free eligibility. Once you are stamped in, you have entered China, and the run counts. If you are making a visa run, you turn around and walk back to the Vietnamese arrival hall. There you present the new e-visa approval, and the entry stamp you receive starts your new stay. Meeting your driver again

Before you walk in, you and the driver agree on the exact meeting point in the parking area by the terminal, and the driver waits there with the car. While you are inside, our travel expert stays reachable on WhatsApp. Send word on how the queue is moving, and the driver is at the meeting point when you walk out. On a one-way crossing into China there is no meeting again: at drop-off the driver helps you unload and checks the car with you, so nothing is left behind.

Pickup and Drop-off: How the Handoffs Work

Pickup at your Hanoi address

The pickup time is agreed when you book. For a visa run it is 5:30 to 6:00 AM, and for a one-way trip it is the time that suits your crossing. Before the day, we send the car type, the number plate and the driver's name on WhatsApp, so you know exactly which car is yours. The driver helps you load your luggage, and before the car leaves you confirm together that you carry your passport and your papers. A visa run left behind in a hotel room cannot be fixed at the gate.

Pickup at Noi Bai Airport

Book with your landing time and your flight number. We track the flight, and the driver waits at the arrivals exit holding a name board with your name. You meet the driver, load your luggage, and the car drives straight to the border. If the flight lands late, the driver is still there when you walk out, because the pickup is timed from the flight and not from the clock. An early landing connects with a same-day visa run. A late morning landing is better paired with a one-way crossing, or a run the next morning.

Drop-off at the gate, and back in Hanoi

At Huu Nghi, the car stops at the passenger terminal door, and the driver helps you unload. What happens next depends on your booking, and both endings are covered in the crossing section above: the meeting point for the same-day return, or the end of the trip for a one-way crossing. When a round trip ends, the car drops you back at the same Hanoi address it picked you up from, and the driver helps you unload there as well.

The Visa Run Day, Hour by Hour

A Hanoi visa run is a same-day return booking: one car takes you up, waits at the gate, and brings you back. The day is planned backwards from the gate, because Huu Nghi is a freight gate first. More than a thousand trucks a day use it, and the last stretch of road is shared with them.

These are planning times for a normal weekday, not promises. The gate opens at 7:00 AM every day and closes at 7:00 PM, or 8:00 PM in the busy season. A late start puts the return stamp at risk, and that is why the pickup is early.

One-Way into China: The Onward Leg

Crossing once, and not coming back the same day, is the other half of this route. The car drops you at the same terminal, and you cross with all your luggage, because no car waits on the other side for you.

On the Chinese side, the nearest town is Pingxiang, a short taxi ride from the port building, and taxis and buses wait outside. From Pingxiang, buses and trains run to Nanning, roughly 3 hours further, and Nanning connects onward to Guangzhou and the rest of China. The international train from Hanoi to Nanning also passes this border, from Gia Lam Station, but it runs overnight and on fixed days. The car leaves when you need it to.

How to Book

Step 1: Message us on WhatsApp at +84 976 694 384, or by email at muineprivatecarservice@gmail.com, with your date, your pickup point in Hanoi, your passenger count, and which booking you need, one way or round trip. Send your passport nationality as well.

Step 2: We check your China entry case and confirm your fixed price and pickup time. The price we confirm is the price in the tables above, and it does not change later.

Step 3: Before the day, we send the car type, the number plate and the driver's name on WhatsApp. The driver then meets you as described in the pickup section above.

No deposit is required. Pay the driver in cash on the day, or pay in advance by card or transfer if you prefer. If your plans change, message us as early as you can.

Frequently Asked Questions

My passport is not on China's visa-free list. Can I still do this run?
Yes, but only with a Chinese visa already in your passport. China admits citizens of around 50 countries without a visa for up to 30 days, under a policy that runs to the end of 2026. If your passport is not one of them, the visa must be arranged in advance, because none is issued at the gate. Send us your nationality when you book and we will tell you which case you are in. What time does the Huu Nghi gate open and close?
The passenger gate opens at 7:00 AM every day of the week. It closes at 7:00 PM, or 8:00 PM in the busy season. The opening hours are long enough for a same-day run, as long as the run starts in the morning. Reaching the gate in the early afternoon leaves too little margin if the queues build, so our visa run pickups leave Hanoi between 5:30 and 6:00 AM.

After I cross into China, how do I get to Pingxiang or Nanning?
Taxis and buses wait outside the Youyi Guan port building. Pingxiang, the first town inside China, is a short taxi ride away. From Pingxiang, buses and trains run to Nanning in roughly 3 hours, and Nanning has onward trains and flights across China. Remember that China is one hour ahead of Vietnam when you read the timetables.

Do the queues change on weekends and public holidays?
Yes. The gate works every day, but it clears about 6,000 to 7,000 people on a normal day, and Vietnamese and Chinese holidays push that number higher. On a holiday weekend the same crossing can take noticeably longer, and the truck traffic on the last stretch builds earlier. If your run falls near a holiday, we will suggest an earlier pickup when we confirm.

What happens if my new Vietnam e-visa is not approved by the morning of the run?
The run cannot start. Without the approval in your hand, you could exit Vietnam but have no way to re-enter, so the car does not leave. Message us as soon as you know, and the booking moves to the first morning after the approval arrives. To protect the day, apply at least 3 working days before you plan to travel, and check that the approval names Huu Nghi International Border Gate as the entry point.
