On the Road: Hanoi to Ha Giang in Four Stages

Stage 1 - Hanoi to Viet Tri  km 0 – 80

Stage 2 - Viet Tri to Tuyen Quang  km 80 – 165

North of Viet Tri, the flat, tranquil plains gradually give way to low, rounded hills, with tea plantations and small forests appearing more and more frequently along the road.

Traffic on this stretch is a steady mix of local buses, motorcycles, and cargo trucks - not the stream of tour buses following the circular route, which is still a few hours away.

The city of Tuyen Quang lies on the banks of the Lo River and serves as a natural stop for coffee or breakfast on an early departure; from here, the mountainous terrain becomes more distinct to the north.

Stage 3 - Tuyen Quang to the Ha Giang Border  km 165 – 250

Past Tuyen Quang, the road narrows and begins to climb steeply, winding through densely forested hills and small villages of the Tay and Dao people nestled along the river valleys.

Limestone outcrops begin to appear more frequently as you approach the provincial border, offering a glimpse of the majestic karst landscape for which this winding route is famous.

The “Welcome to Ha Giang” gate marks the border crossing, where travelers often feel both a sense of relief after several hours on the road and a surge of excitement in anticipation of what lies ahead.

Stage 4 - Into Ha Giang City  km 250 – 303

The final stretch of the road climbs steadily through Vi Xuyen District, with the Lo River running parallel to the road for most of the way, and traffic becoming increasingly heavy as you approach the provincial capital.

Ha Giang City is situated in a vast valley surrounded by mountains, with a growing number of hotels, homestays, and motorcycle rental shops - a clear indication that this town exists primarily to serve the destinations located beyond it.

The driver will continue to take you to your hotel or guesthouse. Upon arrival, they’ll ask you to double-check the vehicle for any forgotten items - phones, headphones, chargers, and even passports are easily left behind after a long day of travel - before helping you unload your luggage. Quan Ba Heaven's Gate & the Dong Van Karst Plateau  Beyond Ha Giang city, the start of the loop

These sit north of Ha Giang city rather than on the direct road in from Hanoi, so they are not part of this transfer, but they are usually the first major landmarks once your loop itself begins. Quan Ba's viewing platform looks down over the valley and the Twin Mountains, while the Dong Van Karst Plateau beyond it is a UNESCO Global Geopark of jagged limestone peaks and terraced rock fields.

Ma Pi Leng Pass & Lung Cu Flag Tower  Further along the loop

Ma Pi Leng, a cliffside road above the Nho Que River gorge, is frequently ranked among Vietnam's most spectacular drives. Lung Cu Flag Tower marks the country's northernmost point near the Chinese border. Both are deeper into the loop than this transfer covers, but worth knowing about while you plan your itinerary out of Ha Giang city.
