NHA TRANG TO PHAN THIET Q&A
1/ What is Phan Thiet and why do people go there from Nha Trang?
Phan Thiet is the capital of Binh Thuan province, about 200 km northeast of Ho Chi Minh City. Most travelers who come here are actually heading for Mui Ne — the beach and resort strip that extends east of Phan Thiet along the coast. Mui Ne is where the red and white sand dunes are, where the fairy stream runs through ochre-colored cliffs, and where the fishing village still launches its round coracle boats at dawn. Phan Thiet city itself is worth a few hours for the fish sauce market, the Cham towers, and the river mouth.
People travel from Nha Trang to Phan Thiet for a few reasons: moving between beach destinations along the south-central coast, catching a flight from Nha Trang after a Mui Ne stay, or simply traveling by land rather than flying. It is one of the more scenic expressway runs in the south — the Ninh Thuan section alone, with its wind turbines and dry red earth, is worth the window seat.
2/ How far is it from Nha Trang to Phan Thiet, and what does the drive involve?
The distance is approximately 235 km (around 146 miles), with a driving time of 3 hours and 32 minutes via the North-South Expressway (ĐCT Bắc–Nam Phía Đông). Four lanes for most of the route, good road surface, and the expressway runs close enough to the coast in parts that the sea appears through the hills between Khanh Hoa and Ninh Thuan.
The landscape shifts noticeably about an hour into the drive. Khanh Hoa is green and coastal; Ninh Thuan is dry, flat, and wide open — it is the least rainy province in Vietnam and it shows. The reddish soil, the wind farms on the ridges, the dragon fruit fields, the salt flats near Phan Rang are all visible from the expressway. Then the road enters Binh Thuan and the terrain shifts again — the distinctive red sand dunes of the Mui Ne area appear before the road reaches Phan Thiet.
Cam Ranh Airport pickup: If your journey starts at CXR rather than a Nha Trang city hotel, that adds roughly 30 km to the starting point. Provide your flight number at booking — we calculate the correct departure time from your landing, not just the distance.

What the Journey Looks Like
Your driver arrives at your Nha Trang hotel at the agreed time — typically 10 minutes early. Bags in the boot, water on the seats. The car joins the North-South Expressway heading south out of Khanh Hoa. The first 40 minutes through the southern end of the province are green and familiar. Then the road crosses into Ninh Thuan and everything changes.
Ninh Thuan is the driest province in Vietnam. The vegetation thins out, the soil goes a deep red-brown, and wind turbines appear on every ridge to the west. Dragon fruit farms line both sides of the road in flat-trained rows, and the occasional salt flat catches the light. It does not look like the rest of Vietnam and that is exactly the point. Most passengers who have not been through this section before end up watching out the window more than they expected to.
After Phan Rang the expressway continues south into Binh Thuan. The terrain softens, the red sand dunes near Mui Ne become visible before the road reaches Phan Thiet. Your driver delivers you directly to your hotel, resort, or any address you provided — in Phan Thiet city, along the Mui Ne beach strip, or at any resort on the coast.
-
Driving time: approximately 3 hours 32 minutes non-stop via the expressway
Pick Up & Departure
We pick up from anywhere in Nha Trang city — hotel lobby, beachfront resort, serviced apartment. If you are coming off a flight, we pick up directly at Cam Ranh Airport (CXR) arrivals. Provide your flight number at booking so the driver adjusts for any delay.
During The Transfer
The expressway is fast and the 3.5-hour run does not require a formal lunch stop unless you want one. A coffee and restroom break somewhere around the Phan Rang area — about 90 minutes in — is enough for most travelers. Your driver knows the right spots.
If you want to add sightseeing stops along the way, these are the places worth building time for on this corridor:
-
Ninh Chu Beach, Phan Rang (~1h 30m from Nha Trang): A wide bay south of Phan Rang town with calm water and almost no foreign tourists. The kite surfing community has found it; most other travelers have not. Worth 20 minutes if the timing works.
-
Po Klong Garai Cham Towers, Phan Rang (~1h 40m from Nha Trang): 13th-century Cham towers on a basalt hill above Phan Rang — one of the best-preserved Cham complexes in the south. Visible from the road. A 20-minute stop if you want to walk the site.
-
Nam Cuong Sand Dunes, Phan Rang (~1h 45m from Nha Trang): Pink-orange dunes at the edge of Phan Rang town. Smaller and quieter than Mui Ne but genuinely striking, especially in the late afternoon light when sheep graze on the lower slopes. Easy roadside access.
-
Mui Ne White and Red Dunes (~3h from Nha Trang): The dunes that most people associate with this coastline. The white dunes are best early morning; the red dunes near town are accessible at any time. The fairy stream walk alongside them is 20 minutes and free. If your hotel is in Mui Ne, this is arrival territory rather than a stop.
If you want to include any of these stops, mention it at booking so we can plan the departure time accordingly. Stops that involve a significant detour may incur a small additional charge — our team will advise before you confirm.
Onward from Phan Thiet / Mui Ne:
We also arrange transfers continuing from Phan Thiet to Ho Chi Minh City, Da Lat, or back to Nha Trang. Book both legs together if you already know your onward date.
Benefits of rest breaks on a 3.5-hour journey:
-
One clean stop around Phan Rang is enough for most travelers — coffee, restroom, stretch, back on the road.
-
Lunch if you want it — the Phan Rang seafood is genuinely good and costs less than Nha Trang. Your driver knows where.
-
Photo stops on request — the Ninh Thuan landscape is photogenic and the expressway has enough elevated sections that a roadside pull-off is sometimes all you need.
-
Door-to-door drop-off in Phan Thiet or Mui Ne — to the exact resort entrance, not the bus terminal.
