Stage 1 - Mu Cang Chai over Khau Pha Pass to Nghia Lo  km 0 – 95

Leaving the terraced rice fields behind, the car almost immediately began climbing Khau Pha Pass - one of Vietnam’s four largest mountain passes - with a sea of clouds shrouding the landscape for the first hour of the journey.

The downhill stretch on the other side gradually leads into Tu Le, a valley village famous for its terraced fields and glutinous rice, before the road opens up to the vast Muong Lo Valley around Nghia Lo.

The stilt-house villages of the White Thai people in Nghia Lo mark the end of the most scenic stretch, and from here on, the journey proceeds at a more steady and direct pace.

Stage 2 - Nghia Lo to Thanh Son  km 95 – 190

East of Nghia Lo, the road gradually descends from the Yen Bai mountains; the densely forested hills and small villages of the Tay and Muong people gradually give way to flatter, more intensively farmed land.

Thanh Son marks the border into Phú Thọ Province; it is a small district town and a logical stop for a rest, now that the most arduous part of the day’s drive is behind you.

Traffic gradually increases along this stretch as the road reconnects with busier provincial highways leading toward the capital.

Stage 3 - Thanh Son to Son Tay  km 190 – 250

Route 32 continues eastward through increasingly densely populated rural areas; the flat fields of the Red River Delta come into view for the first time since Mu Cang Chai, with the Ba Vi mountain range clearly visible to the south.

Traffic increases noticeably as we approach Son Tay, a sign that the outskirts of Hanoi are near, even though the route from here branches off toward the ring roads rather than into the city center.

This is where the route to Noi Bai Airport actually diverges from the bus route to Hanoi, which continues straight into the bustling city center rather than turning north to bypass this area.

Stage 4 - Ring Roads & Nhat Tan Bridge to Noi Bai  km 250 – 277

The car follows Hanoi’s outer ring road system, completely avoiding the slowest and most congested streets in the city center to take a faster route around the north.

As you cross the Red River on the Nhat Tan Bridge, you’ll have a brief moment to take in the expansive view of the water and the city’s southern skyline before the road continues straight toward the airport.

The final kilometers run along Vo Nguyen Giap Boulevard straight to the terminal. The driver will take you to Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 depending on your needs; the entire 277-kilometer journey is completed in a single vehicle without the need to transfer within the city.
