The route north
From Phong Nha the car heads north through Quang Binh and crosses into Ha Tinh at the Ngang Pass. From there it follows the North–South Expressway and Highway 1 through Ha Tinh, Vinh (Nghe An), Thanh Hoa and Ninh Binh, and enters Hanoi from the south. Most of the road is expressway now, which is why the trip is shorter than it used to be.

The usual lunch stop is around Vinh, roughly halfway. The driver will also stop every two to three hours for coffee and the toilet; just tell him if you need a break sooner. The last hour into Hanoi depends a lot on traffic: arriving after 5 PM on a weekday can add 30–60 minutes.
Places you can stop on the way
The trip is long, so we suggest keeping stops short. These are the places that fit the route best. Some are right next to the road; others need a real detour and only make sense if you leave very early.

Ngang Pass
Quang Binh – Ha Tinh border · on the route
The traditional border between Quang Binh and Ha Tinh, known to most Vietnamese from a famous old poem. From the top of the old road there are views over green hills and the coast. The expressway now goes through a tunnel, so ask the driver if you want to take the pass road for the view.
Ke Go Lake
Cam Xuyen, Ha Tinh · detour west
One of the largest reservoirs in the north-central region, with low hills and small islands. A quiet place for a short walk and photos. It adds about an hour to the day, so it suits travelers who are not in a hurry.
Ke Go Lake
Kim Lien (Sen Village)
Nam Dan, Nghe An · near Vinh
The home village of President Ho Chi Minh. You can see the simple house where he grew up, the lotus pond and a small exhibition. Entry is free; dress modestly, as it is an important place for Vietnamese visitors. Combines well with a lunch stop in Vinh.
Kim Lien (Sen Village)
Cua Lo Beach
Near Vinh, Nghe An · detour east
A long beach popular with Vietnamese families, with seafood restaurants along the front. Good for a lunch with a sea view on a sunny day; quiet outside the summer months.
Cam Luong Fish Stream
Cam Thuy, Thanh Hoa · long detour west
A clear mountain stream full of large carp that local people consider sacred and never catch. Interesting, but it is far from the main road. We only recommend it if you leave Phong Nha at dawn or split the trip.
Cam Luong Fish Stream
Bai Dinh Pagoda and Trang An
Gia Vien, Ninh Binh · short detour
Bai Dinh is a huge temple complex on a hillside, and Trang An is known for its boat trips between limestone cliffs. A quick visit to Bai Dinh takes about an hour; the Trang An boat trip takes 2–3 hours, which is too long for a one-day transfer. If you want to see Ninh Binh properly, consider stopping there overnight.
Bai Dinh Pagoda and Trang An
Most of these places are free or have small entry or electric-cart fees, paid on site. The first hour of waiting is free; longer stops are charged per hour.
Planning the day

Notes |
|
Direct |
7:00 AM |
around 3:30 PM |
Lunch near Vinh, short breaks only |
|
With one or two short stops |
6:30 AM |
around 5:00 PM |
e.g. Kim Lien + Bai Dinh |
|
Split in Ninh Binh |
8:00 AM |
Ninh Binh mid-afternoon |
Overnight in Tam Coc, continue to Hanoi next day |
Leave early. For a direct trip, 7:00 AM is a good time: you avoid the worst of the afternoon traffic into Hanoi and still have the evening free. Leaving after 10 AM means arriving in the dark and in rush hour.
Do not plan a cave tour on the same day. Even a short tour followed by 7.5 hours of driving makes for a very long day. Finish your tours the day before.
Think about splitting the trip. Ninh Binh is about 1.5–2 hours before Hanoi and is worth a night of its own. Many travelers go Phong Nha → Tam Coc one day and Tam Coc → Hanoi later. Ask us for both transfers together.

Car, bus, train or plane?
Phong Nha to Hanoi is the route where travelers compare options the most, because the alternatives are cheaper but slower or less direct.

* Sedan price shared by 3–4 people. Bus, train and flight prices are rough figures and change with the season.
Choose the bus or train if you are travelling alone, on a tight budget, and do not mind a night journey.
Choose the car if you are three or more people, have children or heavy luggage, want to travel in daylight, or want to stop in Ninh Binh or Kim Lien on the way.
Tips for a long transfer
-
Have your Hanoi address ready. Many hotels in the Old Quarter are on narrow one-way streets where cars cannot stop for long. Send us the exact address; if the car cannot reach the door, the driver will help carry your bags the last few metres.
-
Bring snacks and a charger. The driver stops regularly, but having water, snacks and a phone charger in the car makes the day easier.
-
Rainy season: central Vietnam has heavy rain from about September to December. Expect the drive to be slower on those days.
-
Cash: small notes are useful for drinks, toilets and entry tickets at stops.
-
Check the car before you leave it. The driver will check with you, but chargers and sunglasses are the most common items left behind.
Booking, payment and cancellation
-
Send us your travel date, preferred departure time, your accommodation in Phong Nha, your hotel in Hanoi, the number of people and bags, and any stops you would like.

We confirm the vehicle and price. A 50% deposit secures the booking – PayPal, bank transfer, credit card, or cash if we meet in person.
-
Before departure you receive the driver’s name, phone number and the car’s license plate.
-
The rest is paid to the driver when you arrive in Hanoi: cash (VND or USD), PayPal, bank transfer or card.

Frequently asked questions
How far is Phong Nha from Hanoi?
About 473 km. The driving time is around 7.5 hours, so with lunch and short breaks the whole trip takes 8 to 8.5 hours.
How much is a private car from Phong Nha to Hanoi?
A sedan for up to 3 people is $243, a medium SUV $290, a 7-seat SUV $340 and a 16-seat minivan $390. Prices are per car, one way.
Is it better to take the car or the sleeper bus?
The bus is cheaper per person, but it usually runs overnight and arrives at a bus station. For three or more people, families or anyone with heavy luggage, the car is more comfortable and the difference in price per person is smaller than it looks.
What time should we leave Phong Nha?
Around 7:00 AM for a direct trip, or 6:30 AM if you want one or two stops. Leaving late means arriving in Hanoi in the evening rush hour.
Can we stop in Ninh Binh on the way?
Yes. A short visit to Bai Dinh Pagoda takes about an hour. A Trang An boat trip takes 2–3 hours, so for that we suggest staying a night in Ninh Binh and splitting the transfer.
Can we visit Ho Chi Minh’s home village at Kim Lien?
Yes, it is close to Vinh, where most people stop for lunch anyway. Allow 45 to 60 minutes. Entry is free.
Can you drop us at Noi Bai Airport?
Yes. The airport is about 30 km beyond central Hanoi. Tell us your flight time when booking and we will confirm the price and plan the departure.
Can you drop us in the Old Quarter?
Yes. Some streets are narrow or one-way; if the car cannot stop at the door, the driver will help you with your bags to the hotel.
Is the price per person or per car?
Per car, for up to the number of seats listed.
How many breaks does the driver make?
Usually every two to three hours, plus a lunch stop. You can ask for extra breaks at any time.
Do you provide child seats?
Yes, child seats and booster seats are free on request. Please give us the child’s age when you book.
Is there Wi-Fi in the car?
If you need Wi-Fi in the car, ask us when you book. Most travelers simply use a local SIM or eSIM, which has signal along almost the whole route.
How do we pay?
50% deposit when booking, the rest to the driver at drop-off in cash (VND or USD), PayPal, bank transfer or card.
Do we need to tip the driver?
No. Tips are welcome if you enjoyed the trip, but they are not expected.
