These are whole-car prices. Whether two or five of you ride in the large SUV, you pay $222. Fuel, road and expressway tolls, parking and the driver are all in the price.

We pick the vehicle by passengers and luggage. A car that technically seats everyone is not always comfortable for six hours. If you are four or more with big suitcases, tell us the number of bags and we will suggest the right size.

• Per person: a sedan shared by three comes to about $67 each; the large SUV for five is about $45 each.
• Holidays: during Tet, 30 April – 1 May, National Day (2 September) and Mid-Autumn, prices can rise 15–20%.

Which part of Ninh Binh are you going to?

"Ninh Binh" can mean several different places, and they are not next to each other. Most visitors stay in one of the areas below. The exact address affects the last part of the drive, so please send us your hotel name when booking.

Many homestays in Tam Coc and around Trang An are on narrow village lanes. If the car cannot reach the door, the driver stops as close as possible and helps carry your bags.

The road north, section by section

The car heads north out of Quang Binh, crosses into Ha Tinh at the Ngang Pass and then follows the North–South Expressway and Highway 1 through Ha Tinh, Nghe An and Thanh Hoa into Ninh Binh. Most of the way is expressway, so the drive is faster and smoother than people expect.

The natural lunch stop is in or near Vinh, a little over halfway. The driver also stops every two to three hours for coffee and the toilet – and any time you ask.

Breaking the journey: worthwhile stops

A transfer of six hours is long enough already. We recommend choosing one stop, two at most, plus lunch. The first 60 minutes of waiting are free.

Ngang Pass (Deo Ngang)

Quang Binh – Ha Tinh border · on the route

The old border between two provinces, crossing the Hoanh Son range. The expressway now goes through a tunnel, but the driver can take the old pass road for views over the hills and the coast. A 15–20 minute stretch-and-photo stop.

Dong Loc Junction (Ho Chi Minh Trail memorial)

Can Loc, Ha Tinh · short detour

A key junction on the supply route during the war, remembered especially for the ten young volunteers who died here in 1968. Today there is a memorial and graves in a quiet, well-kept setting. A meaningful stop if you are interested in the history of the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

Lam Kinh Historical Site

Tho Xuan, Thanh Hoa · longer detour west

The home base of the Le dynasty in the 15th century, with restored gates, temples and royal tombs in a green setting. Interesting, but it adds about an hour and a half of driving, so it suits travelers who leave early and are in no hurry.

Cuc Phuong National Park

Ninh Binh province · detour west before Ninh Binh

Vietnam’s oldest national park, with forest trails and a primate rescue centre. It is really a destination in itself; a quick visit on a transfer day only gives you a taste. Consider a separate day trip from Ninh Binh.

Our advice: for most travelers, the Ngang Pass plus a proper lunch in Vinh is the right balance. Save the big sights for when you are in Ninh Binh.

Picking a departure time

The departure time is yours to choose. For most people, 7:30–8:00 AM works best: you arrive with daylight left to check in, walk around Tam Coc or book a boat for the next morning.

After a cave tour: this is possible if the tour finishes around lunchtime. Tell us which tour you are on; we will allow time to go back to the hotel, collect your bags and have a quick meal. Expect to arrive in Ninh Binh after dark.

Arriving in Tam Coc after dark: some homestays are on small unlit lanes. Arriving before 6 PM makes it easier to find your way and check in.

How the pick-up works, step by step

Here is what happens from the moment you book until you are on the road out of Phong Nha.

1. After you book

Once the deposit is paid, you receive a confirmation with the date, pick-up time, pick-up address in Phong Nha and drop-off address in Ninh Binh. Please check these details carefully – especially the hotel names, since several homestays in Phong Nha and Tam Coc have similar names.

2. The day before

We send you the driver’s name, his phone number (WhatsApp or Zalo), the type of car and the license plate. If you are leaving after a cave tour, this is also when we check the tour’s real finish time with the tour company and confirm the pick-up time with you.

3. On the morning of the trip

• The driver arrives at your hotel or homestay 10–15 minutes before the agreed time and parks as close to the entrance as possible.
• He messages you when he arrives, so you know he is there. If you are still packing or having breakfast, just reply – there is no need to rush.
• If you cannot see the car, call the driver or our hotline (+84 976 694 384). Some homestays in Phong Nha are on small lanes, and the driver may wait at the nearest corner the car can reach.
• The driver loads your luggage into the boot and helps with heavy bags.

4. Before leaving the hotel

The driver will remind you to check that you have everything: travel documents, wallet, phones and chargers, and anything left in the room safe or at reception. Have you returned your room key and settled the hotel bill? It is much easier to sort this out now than from the road.

5. Picking up after a cave tour

• If your bags are at the hotel, the driver meets you there when you get back from the tour. Take the time you need to shower and change – the free hour of waiting covers this.
• If you are coming straight from the tour office, tell us in advance. The driver can collect your bags from the hotel first and meet you at the tour office, so you leave from there directly.
• If the tour runs late, let the driver know by message. He will wait.

6. On the way and on arrival

Once everyone is in the car, you set off directly for Ninh Binh – no other passengers are collected. The driver stops for coffee, toilets and lunch whenever you need. In Ninh Binh he drives you to your accommodation (or the nearest point on a narrow lane), unloads your luggage and checks the car with you before saying goodbye.

Tip: save the driver’s number in your phone the day before and turn on WhatsApp notifications. Most pick-up problems come from a missed message.

Travelling with kids or lots of bags

Child seats and booster seats are available on request and free of charge. Tell us your child’s age, size if relevant, and how many seats you need, so we can set them up for your car. For a long drive like this, please ask in advance rather than on the day.

If you have a pushchair, large suitcases or sports equipment, send us a list. A medium or large SUV is usually the better choice for families, and the minivan for groups with heavy luggage.

Car vs. sleeper bus vs. train

The bus and train are cheaper, but both usually mean a night journey and extra transfers at the ends. With a group of three or more, or with children, the car is often the easier choice – and you arrive rested.

Before you go

• Send the exact address. Tam Coc, Trang An and Ninh Binh City are different places. The hotel name and full address help the driver plan the last few kilometres.
• Leave a buffer. 5.5–6.5 hours is a planning figure, not a promise. If you have a boat trip or a train booked in Ninh Binh the same day, do not plan a tight connection.
• Rainy season: from about September to December, rain in central Vietnam can slow the first part of the drive.
• Keep essentials with you: documents, phone, wallet and charger in your hand bag, not in the boot.
• Before you get out: the driver checks the car with you, but it is worth a second look under the seats.
