Across the Delta to the Coast
This is one of the longer routes we operate, and the changing landscape makes it feel like a genuine road trip. From Tay Ninh, you head south through farmland toward the N2 expressway. Near My An, the road joins the expressway heading toward Cao Lanh — wide, smooth, and fast. After Cao Lanh, you turn west onto the QL80, a two-lane road that traces the northern edge of the delta all the way to Ha Tien. This stretch passes through small towns, rice fields, and near the Tra Su cajeput forest — a huge flooded forest sanctuary worth knowing about if you have time. Closer to Ha Tien, limestone mountains start appearing on the horizon, and the air turns salty.
Ha Tien — Where Vietnam Meets Cambodia
Ha Tien is unlike anywhere else in the Mekong Delta. Instead of flat rice fields, you get limestone karsts rising straight out of the water — the same kind you see in Ha Long Bay, but smaller and quieter. The town itself is small and walkable, built around a river that flows into the Gulf of Thailand. There is a beach, a busy morning market, and a pier where boats leave for Phu Quoc. The Cambodian border post at Xa Xia is just a few kilometers away, so the town has a cross-border feel — Khmer influences in the architecture, Vietnamese river life, and travelers passing through on their way to or from Cambodia. It is the kind of place that grows on you slowly.
Why a Private Car for This Route?
This is the longest route we run from Tay Ninh. At seven and a half hours, the way you travel matters more than on shorter trips.
-
Public transport is not practical There is no direct bus from Tay Ninh to Ha Tien. You would need to go to Can Tho first, then find another bus heading west. That route takes most of a day and involves heavy waits at bus stations.
-
A long drive needs comfort Seven and a half hours in a shared minibus is exhausting. In a private car, you stretch out, control the air conditioning, listen to your own music, and stop whenever you need a break.
-
You can stop at Tra Su Forest The Tra Su cajeput forest is a massive flooded forest sanctuary near the QL80 route, about an hour before Ha Tien. With a private car, you can stop there for an hour or two — something impossible on a bus.
-
Door-to-door avoids extra taxis Ha Tien does not have Grab or many ride-hailing options. A private car drops you exactly where you need to be — your hotel, the ferry pier, or the border gate.
-
Flexible with border crossing plans If you are continuing to Cambodia from Ha Tien, we can drop you at the Xa Xia border gate. From there it is a short walk into Cambodia. Let us know when booking so we plan the best drop-off point.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions from our travelers
Is seven and a half hours in a car really necessary? Could we break the trip?
Yes, the drive is long — 351 kilometers. But it is broken up naturally by the route: you pass through Cao Lanh after about 3 hours, then Chau Doc around hour 5, and finally Ha Tien. You can stop for lunch in Chau Doc or visit the Tra Su Forest along the way. The driver is happy to make stops.
Can you drop me at the Ha Tien ferry port for Phu Quoc?
Yes. The Ha Tien ferry terminal is about 2 kilometers from the town center. We can drop you directly at the terminal. Ferries from Ha Tien to Phu Quoc run daily and take about 2.5 hours.
I want to cross into Cambodia from Ha Tien. Can you drop me at the border?
Absolutely. The Xa Xia border gate is about 10 minutes from Ha Tien town center. We can drop you right at the Vietnamese side. From there, you walk across and arrange transport on the Cambodian side. Let us know when booking so we plan the drop-off accordingly.
What kind of roads are on this route?
Most of the drive is on good roads. The N2 section near My An is expressway quality. The QL80 from Cao Lanh to Ha Tien is a two-lane national highway — generally well-paved but with some slower sections through towns. Nothing that requires a 4x4.
Is it better to go to Ha Tien or Rach Gia for the Phu Quoc ferry?
If you are coming from Tay Ninh, Ha Tien is further (351 km vs 258 km), but the ferry from Ha Tien to Phu Quoc is shorter. For some travelers, the total time works out similarly. It depends on which part of Phu Quoc you are heading to. Tell us your plans and we can advise.
What vehicle do you recommend for a group of four going to Ha Tien?
For four people with luggage for a beach trip, we recommend the standard SUV. It gives everyone a comfortable seat with legroom for the long drive, and there is space in the back for four large bags. If you are bringing extra gear for Phu Quoc, the premium SUV is even more spacious.
Can we stop at the Tra Su Bird Sanctuary on the way?
Yes, and we recommend it. Tra Su is a flooded cajeput forest about 50 kilometers before Ha Tien, right near the QL80. You can take a boat through the forest — it takes about an hour. Just let us know in advance so we allow enough time in the schedule.
Do you operate this route at night?
Yes, we operate 24/7. Some travelers prefer an early morning departure to arrive in Ha Tien by early afternoon. Others leave in the evening and arrive at night. Both are possible. If you are catching a morning ferry to Phu Quoc, we recommend leaving Tay Ninh the evening before and staying overnight in Ha Tien.
