Mu Cang Chai to Ha Giang Private Car Transfer

If you’ve finished exploring Mu Cang Chai and are ready to begin your journey around Ha Giang, skip the detour through Hanoi. We offer a private car service from Mu Cang Chai to Ha Giang, connecting the two most memorable mountainous destinations in northern Vietnam via a direct 279-km route. Since neither of these towns is a major transportation hub, traveling by public transportation may mean having to go back through Hanoi instead of heading straight north, causing you to lose precious time before your Ha Giang tour officially begins.

Book a private transfer with Mui Ne Private Car for a direct trip in a single vehicle, traversing the remote mountainous region to Ha Giang City without having to change buses or pass through the capital.

Why Hiring a Private Car Is the Best Way to Start Your Trip Around Ha Giang

More and more tours of northern Vietnam are combining a visit to the Mu Cang Chai terraced fields with a tour around Ha Giang, and the idea of driving directly from one destination to the other makes perfect sense. The problem is that both are the endpoints of separate itineraries, not part of a single connected route, so there is no public transportation running directly between the two places.

Using a private driver to travel directly through this area solves the problem neatly. Instead of enduring a long bus ride back to Hanoi and then transferring to another mode of transportation to head north, a private car will drive straight through Luc Yen and Bac Quang, taking significantly less time than that circuitous route.

This also means you’ll arrive in Ha Giang City and be ready to start your loop tour immediately, rather than having to spend a day resting first. A private taxi on this route will pass through some of Yen Bai’s quietest districts - rural areas that both day-trippers visiting Mu Cang Chai and those on the Ha Giang loop tour rarely get to see.

Hoang Su Phi note: If you want to see Hoang Su Phi's own terraced fields on the way, build in extra time rather than treating it as a quick stop. It sits off the direct route, and seeing it properly is better suited to an added day than a straight-through transfer.

Choose Your Vehicle

Close to seven hours including a mountain pass is comfortable in any of these. Choose by group size and how much is travelling with you.

On the Road: Mu Cang Chai to Ha Giang in Four Stages

Kilometre marks are approximate. Your driver will choose the fastest connection along QL279 and pace Khau Pha Pass for comfort.

Stage 1 - Mu Cang Chai over Khau Pha Pass to Tu Le & Nghia Lo  km 0 – 49

Your driver will arrive at the agreed-upon pickup point a little early, with the air conditioning already on and the car ready to go. After helping you load your luggage into the car, the driver will double-check with you to make sure everything is loaded before departure, so you don’t have to rush to start your long day.

Leaving the terraced rice fields behind, the car almost immediately begins the ascent up Khau Pha Pass - one of Vietnam’s four largest mountain passes - with a sea of clouds shrouding the entire initial stretch of the journey.

The descent on the other side leads to Tu Le, a valley village famous for its terraced fields and glutinous rice, before the road opens up to the vast Muong Lo Valley around Nghia Lo.

The stilt-house villages of the White Thai people in Nghia Lo mark the final truly scenic stretch before the route turns onto National Highway 279 and begins heading north instead of east.

Stage 2 - Nghia Lo to Luc Yen: Gemstone Country  km 49 – 139

North of Nghia Lo, the road leads into a truly remote area, with limestone hills rising abruptly from narrow valleys, where traffic is much sparser than the crowds typically seen along the Mu Cang Chai route or the Ha Giang loop.

Luc Yen District is one of Vietnam’s most important regions for ruby and jade mining, and the small gemstone shops in the district town are a testament to an industry that most tourists at either end of this route rarely get to see.

The Chay River runs parallel to the road for a long stretch here, with towering limestone peaks rising above the water, creating a landscape that feels far more pristine than the winding roads on either side.

Stage 3 - Luc Yen to Bac Quang  km 139 – 219

Traffic on this stretch is generally light, and the road winds up and down through hilly terrain, offering a landscape that feels increasingly different from the flatter valleys to the south.

Bac Quang District marks the southern border of Ha Giang Province, a lowland region where tea and fruit trees are cultivated, creating a stark contrast to the higher limestone plateau located a few hours’ drive to the north.

Stage 4 - Bac Quang to Ha Giang City  km 219 – 279

National Highway 2 runs through its final northern stretch through Vi Xuyen District, where the tea plantations and forests of the Ha Giang plains gradually give way to the first rounded hills, signaling the limestone plateau ahead.

The Lo River runs parallel to the road for most of this final stretch, and traffic volume increases noticeably as the route approaches the provincial capital. Ha Giang City is situated in a vast valley surrounded by mountains, serving as a convenient starting point for the northern loop journey to Quan Ba, Dong Van, and Meo Vac. The driver will continue to take you to your hotel or the bus station.

Upon arrival, they’ll ask you to double-check the car for any forgotten items - phones, headphones, chargers, or even passports, which are easily left behind after a long day on the road - before helping you unload your luggage. From there, all that’s left is to wish you a memorable round-trip journey ahead, with the 279-km route completed in full without having to return via Hanoi.

Notable Stops Along the Way

Khau Pha Pass Viewpoint  Near the start

A well-known lookout near the pass summit, famous for sea-of-cloud views on clear mornings. It sits directly on the route not far out of Mu Cang Chai, so a stop costs only 15 to 20 minutes.

Luc Yen Gemstone District  On the route

One of Vietnam's best-known ruby and sapphire mining areas, with small gem-trading shops in the district town and karst scenery along the Chay River. A short stop to browse or stretch the legs adds 15 to 20 minutes.

Hoang Su Phi Terraced Fields  Genuine detour, near the destination

One of Vietnam's other great terraced-rice regions, with fields climbing steep H'mong and Dao-farmed hillsides in patterns quite different from Mu Cang Chai's own. It sits off the direct route north, so this is a genuine half-day to full-day detour near the end of the journey rather than a quick stop, better suited to travellers with a flexible schedule before starting the loop.

Frequently Asked Questions: Mu Cang Chai to Ha Giang

Q1: How long does a private car take from Mu Cang Chai to Ha Giang?

A: About 6 hours 50 minutes for the 279 km, crossing Khau Pha Pass and passing through the Luc Yen gemstone region. Add 20 to 30 minutes for a rest stop.

Q2: Is there a direct bus between Mu Cang Chai and Ha Giang?

A: No reliable direct service exists. Both are endpoints of their own loop itineraries rather than connected transport hubs, so linking them by bus usually means backtracking through Hanoi. A private car runs the direct route without it.

Q3: Can we detour to Hoang Su Phi's terraced fields on the way?

A: Yes, though it is a genuine detour rather than a quick stop, since it sits off the most direct route north. It suits travellers with an extra half-day or full day to spare before starting the loop.

Q4: Does this route also cross Khau Pha Pass?

A: Yes. The road out of Mu Cang Chai toward Nghia Lo climbs Khau Pha Pass before the route continues north through Luc Yen and Bac Quang into Ha Giang province.

Q5: Is this a good way to start the Ha Giang Loop?

A: Yes. Many guests use this transfer to move straight from the rice terraces into Ha Giang city, where the loop begins, without a day lost backtracking through the capital.

Q6: How much does the transfer cost?

A: Per vehicle, one way: $150 for a sedan, $157 for a medium SUV, $163 for a large SUV and $205 for a 16-seat van. Fuel and road tolls are included.

Q7: Which vehicle should I choose?

A: A sedan suits one to three passengers with light bags. A medium or large SUV adds ride height many guests prefer on the Khau Pha switchbacks, and the 16-seat van suits larger photography groups.
