A decent rest stop if you need one: clean, has food stalls and fuel. It's not a tourist destination but it's genuine delta town life. The drive through here is busiest in the morning when the market is active.

Hau Giang to Soc Trang City — ~60 km, ~1 hr 20 min

South of Nga Bay, QL1A continues through Hau Giang then crosses into Soc Trang province. The visual shift is subtle at first — the road is similar, the paddies are similar — but by the time you're 15–20 km from Soc Trang city, the first Khmer temples start appearing in earnest. Not roadside shrines but proper full-scale Buddhist complexes: walled compounds with multi-tiered gate towers, rows of coconut palms along the approach path, and the vivid yellow-orange-red color palette of Khmer sacred architecture standing out against the flat green of the surrounding rice land. The density increases as you approach the city.

Soc Trang - The Khmer Province

Soc Trang province has the highest concentration of Khmer people in Vietnam outside of the Cambodian border regions — around 30% of the province's population. That percentage translates to something tangible at ground level: temples on almost every significant corner of the city, Khmer script on signboards, monks in saffron robes at the morning market, and a culinary scene shaped by three overlapping food traditions. It's one of the most genuinely multicultural places in the Mekong Delta, and it doesn't feel performed for tourists. The temples are active religious sites, the festivals are for the community first, and the food is what people actually eat.

When to go:

• November to April (dry season): Best overall window. QL1A is reliable in dry weather, Soc Trang's city streets and temple grounds are easy to walk, and the sky over the delta rice fields is clear enough that the drive down from Can Tho has a distinct quality — flat horizon, wide sky, occasional temple roofline breaking the treeline.
• Ok Om Bok Festival — rằm tháng 10 âm lịch (typically November): The biggest reason many people come to Soc Trang specifically at this time. The festival — also called Lễ Cúng Trăng or the Moon Worshipping Ceremony — is one of the three most important events in the Khmer calendar, alongside Chol Chnam Thmay and Sen Dolta. It was formally recognised as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2026. The main ceremony happens at Quảng trường Bạch Đằng at moonrise on the 15th night; the ghe Ngo (Naga dragon boat) races take place on the Maspero River the following days. The city fills up — book ahead if you're coming for this.
• May to October (wet season): Soc Trang gets meaningful rainfall in this period. The rice fields are at their most saturated green and the temples are quieter. QL1A handles rain well — the drive is fine — but some of the smaller lanes and district roads outside the city center can be muddy.
• Departure from Can Tho: 7:00–8:00am departure gets you into Soc Trang by 9:30am — before the midday heat and with the full day ahead. The temples are at their most photogenic in early morning light, and the bún nước lèo breakfast stalls near Chùa Dơi are worth hitting before 10am.

What to do in Soc Trang:

• Chùa Dơi (Mahatup Temple — Bat Pagoda): The temple most visitors come to first — named for the thousands of fruit bats that roost in the compound trees and hang there through the day. The temple itself is a working Khmer Buddhist monastery with monks in residence, a beautiful chánh điện (main hall), and a relaxed atmosphere that doesn't feel like a tourist attraction even when tourists are present. Go in the morning when the monks are active. Budget an hour.
• Chùa Đất Sét (Clay Pagoda): One of the most unusual temples in Vietnam — its entire interior is covered in clay sculptures created by one family over four generations, beginning in 1928. Thousands of figures: Buddhas, deities, mythological creatures, architectural models, all made from clay mixed with ash and rice husks and painted. The scale is extraordinary and it's genuinely unlike anything else in the south. 30–45 minutes.
• Chùa Chén Kiểu (Sà Lôn Temple): About 12 km outside Soc Trang city — worth the extra distance. The interior decoration uses broken porcelain mosaic on a scale that covers every surface, and the compound has a serenity that the more visited temples lack. Best on a weekday morning when it's quiet.
• Soc Trang night market and Maspero waterfront: The Maspero River runs through the city, and the evening waterfront — cafes, food stalls, families out walking — is the city's social center. The night market nearby is where you find bánh pía (buy directly from the manufacturer, not from souvenir shops), bánh cống, and the local version of chè (sweet Khmer-style dessert soups) that you won't find outside the province.
• Bún nước lèo: Soc Trang's signature dish — pork-and-fish broth noodle soup with shrimp paste and lemongrass, Khmer in origin, served at hole-in-the-wall shops from 6am. The version here is different from the Trà Vinh version in ways that are difficult to describe but immediately obvious when you taste both. Find a stall near Chùa Dơi and go early.
