1. How far is Phong Nha from Moc Chau?

About 550 km by road. The exact number depends on the route the driver takes on the day.

2. How long does it take?

Plan for 10 to 11 hours including a lunch stop and a few short breaks. Pure driving time is around 9.5 hours. The last 2-3 hours are in the mountains, where the road is slower.

3. Which way does the car go?

North from Phong Nha through Ha Tinh and Nghe An, then into Thanh Hoa. From there the road turns west into the hills, past Mai Chau, and up Highway 6 onto the Moc Chau plateau. The driver may change the route depending on road works, weather or landslides in the rainy season. You do not need to go through Ha Noi.

4. One day or two days?

Both work. In one day, leave Phong Nha around 6 am and you arrive in Moc Chau late afternoon or early evening. If you split it, Ninh Binh or Mai Chau are good places to stay the night. Mai Chau is closer to Moc Chau, so the second day is short (about 1.5-2 hours). Hotels for the overnight stop are not included, but we can suggest some.

5. What are the other options?

• Bus via Ha Noi: the cheapest. Usually a night bus to Ha Noi, then another bus to Moc Chau. Expect 15+ hours and a change of bus with your luggage.
• Self-drive: possible, but it is a long day with mountain roads, trucks and motorbikes. Most visitors do not want to do it.
• Private car: door to door, you choose the departure time and the stops, fixed price per car.

On a 10-hour trip, being able to stop when you want and not change buses in Ha Noi makes a big difference.

PHONG NHA TO MOC CHAU - HOW THE DAY GOES

I. Pickup at your Phong Nha hotel

The driver arrives a few minutes before the agreed time and messages you on WhatsApp. For a one-day trip we suggest leaving at 6 am. It feels early, but it means you arrive in Moc Chau before dark - the mountain road is much easier in daylight.

II. The first half - flat roads going north

The first 5-6 hours are on lowland roads through Ha Tinh, Nghe An and Thanh Hoa. Not much scenery: towns, rice fields, petrol stations. Most people sleep or read. A good time for lunch is around Thanh Hoa, before the mountains start.

III. The second half - into the mountains

After Thanh Hoa the road climbs into the hills. This is the nice part: limestone mountains, Thai and Muong villages, stilt houses, rice terraces near Mai Chau. The road has many bends. If you get car sick, take a tablet before this part and sit in the front.

IV. Arrival in Moc Chau

The driver takes you to your hotel or homestay door and unloads your bags. Some homestays are on small roads outside town - send us the exact address or a Google Maps pin when you book. Before leaving, the driver does a quick 30-second check of the car for phones, wallets, earphones and passports.

Moc Chau is a highland district in Son La province, known for tea hills, dairy farms and fruit orchards. It is cooler than the lowlands all year. The town itself is small and simple - the reason to come is the countryside around it.

When to go

• January - February: plum and peach blossom, around Tet. The busiest time of year - book hotels early.
• March - April: mild weather, fewer visitors.
• May - June: plum harvest, you will see fruit sold everywhere along the road.
• June - September: rainy season. Green and quiet, but expect showers and slower roads.
